Last weekend, we had the great pleasure of visiting Feederbrook Farm for shearing day. Earlier this winter, we visited and met Lisa, and chose the sheep that we'll be working with for the program.
Bottle feeding the babies was a super sweet delight!
Petyon here, pre-shearing. Her fleece is huge, and 4 families will share in the fiber. At the end of the program, we'll each receive yarn or roving, processed from her wool.
The kids got to help a bit in skirting the fleece... removing portions that are really dirty (head and tail ends), coarse, or otherwise unsuitable for processing.
After shearing, we got to visit and tour another local farm Oak Spring farm, and learn a bit about egg production. The kids got to help start some greens, in the greenhouse.
Finally, fresh straw beds made for the newly naked, to keep them warm. Tossing straw around was tons of fun!
Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lisa!
DeleteWhat a fantastic experience! Fiber & CSA- combining one of my favorite things with one of my favorite concepts, very cool.
ReplyDeleteYou have to know how giddy I was to stumble upon it, and so local!

ReplyDeleteThank you, Sherry!
DeleteSo neat you are doing this Heather. I have always wondered if this would be a neat way to record what we are up to for ourselves…I'll be curious how you feel after doing your blog for a bit and where it leads you! And of course your photos and thoughts are always uplifting and a fun peak into your lives (since we don't seem to get to see much of each other anymore!).
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to see where it leads, and how sustainable it will be as well! Interestingly, it's already helping me with organization, time magangement, and discipline with computer time. I'm excited to share, connect, and document! Thanks for your kind words, friend!
